Inquest Into Custody Death Opens

An inquest began yesterday into the death of a 38-year-old Birmingham man who died after being taken into police custody more than six years ago.

Michael Powell died on September 7, 2003 after being taken to a police station in the Handsworth area of the city.

The father of three, a cousin of the poet and writer Benjamin Zephaniah, had been arrested following a disturbance outside his mother's home in the Lozells area of the city.

A jury sitting at Sutton Coldfield Town Hall is expected to hear up to six weeks of evidence.
