The Popularity of JLS brought Birmingham’s Christmas Lights Concert to an early close as thousands flocked to the star studded event.
Due to safety concerns, an emergency meeting was called and a joint decision between Birmingham City Council, Emergency Services, BRMB and Millennium Point was made to cancel the event following JLS’s show stopping Performance.
Due to a combination of overnight weather conditions and the number of people flocking to the event, there was no option other than to cancel the event.
Joan Durose, Head of Events for Birmingham City Council said “At 1.30pm we reached capacity and closed the gates with just under 20,000 people on site. At the end of JLS’s performance, a safety fence was breached allowing too many people into the square and the difficult decision was made to cancel the show. We are very sorry and we know people are disappointed but the health and safety of everybody was our prime concern”.
Phil Riley Chief Executive BRMB said “We are all as disappointed as everyone else that we had to cancel the event, as you can imagine we’ve worked hard across the last three months to ensure that today’s line up was bigger and better than ever before. However the safety of our listeners is our utmost importance and once this was compromised there was no other option than to cancel the event”.

(18/11/2009 09:24:30) i got there really early i woz on the front row and i saw jls, and i woz really happy because i made a really big poster and jls looked at it, all the girls should be happy jls did say all the girls in birmingham were beatiful and that made me feel really pround but it woz ashame that some people ruined for othe people but i am REALLY HAPPY i SAW JLS so thank you for thank it would be good to have another event like this next year.... |

(16/11/2009 14:54:58) me and my friends was soo excited when we arrived at the concert in birmingham. we were soo happy to see jls come on stage as we have neve see them in person before after they sang we were shocked that no one was tellinh us what was happening we discied to maove down to the fair part but found that insted of walking we was getting pushed. i then seen i little lad in a red top which really mad me what to cry i was soo shocked. BUT I GOT TO SEEE JLS WITH MY CLOSE MATES SOO ITS ALL GOOD AND I FEEL SORRY FOR THE PEOPLE THAT GOT HURT. AT THE END OF TEH DAY EVERY ONE WAS HAVING FUN UNTILL SOME PEOPLE HAD 2 RUNIT THANKS A LOT X |

(15/11/2009 14:53:56) I am really happy i got to see JLS they were really good, it was really bad organisation and i hope the people who got hurt are ok., This is really disapointing for birmingham. However i hope that famous bands will want to be part of something like this again. Thank you for organising this event. |

(15/11/2009 14:00:37) It was a huge shame that yesterday the concert got cancelled but at least me and my friends had seen JLS they were amazing, we were looking forward to seeing other acts as well so we were dissapointed but it was the best decision in the end. Hope Next Year Will Be Better! |

(15/11/2009 12:38:45) It was a shame it got cancelled and what bit i could see through pushimg and shoving JLS were really good. i was there with my daughter and sister and only got there about 1.30pm. i was well shocked by the amount of people.as we went to the event in 2007 with leona lewis and other artists and the event went well. |
